Highway 1 Update

highway 1 Closure Travel Updates

California Highway 1 green and white icon with transparent background

You have probably heard the news: Highway 1 will not be open all the way from Carmel to Cambria in 2024, as CalTrans—the California Transportation department—determines the best and safest way to repair the damage from one remaining landslide. For now, a six-mile closure extends from two miles North of Lucia to just South of Esalen. Even bikes and pedestrians are prohibited from crossing the closure. And there is no alternate route at this time.

How does this affect your Ragged Point plans?

  • If you are traveling from the South (from Cambria, Santa Barbara, or Los Angeles) or the East (from Paso Robles or California’s Central Valley), Highway 1 is wide open to Ragged Point! So you can stay and dine at Ragged Point Inn, and even continue 28 miles north to fully experience the beauty and majesty of the south Big Sur coast.

  • If you are traveling from the North (from Carmel, San Jose, or San Francisco), you cannot reach Ragged Point Inn by traveling directly through Big Sur on Highway 1. Instead, you need to take Highway 46 West to Cambria, then take Highway 1 North from there.

  • From Ragged Point, you cannot reach Big Sur, Carmel, or other points North by taking Highway 1 North. You have to drive Highway 1 South through Cambria until the road reopens.

We hope you visit us to enjoy the same enchanting beauty as always, just with lower prices and fewer people,

When planning your visit, the best strategy is to go to the CalTrans website at https://roads.dot.ca.gov/ to check road conditions. If in doubt, call our front desk at (805) 927-4502 or (888) 584-6374.
